Iraq and EU: Prospects for Partnership and Reconstruction

In the presence of political and academic elites, Mr. Ramon talked first saying that the existing tensions between the USA and Iran, and their huge effects on the regional level, as well as the internal challenges that the new government should face, have put the European Union in a delicate position and affected the way of its response in helping Iraq to achieve peace and stability. Moreover, he said that the most important stage that follows the militant defeat of ISIS is to achieve peace and the reconstruction of the country, and strengthen the relation between the government and citizens. He also commend the role of civilian community, considering it as the cornerstone in the future of Iraq. He elaborated that “we are seeking to support the political dialogue and consensus as it is one of the most important factors that can help creating useful public policies for the country.” In addition, H.E. Ambassador pointed out to “TAHAWER” project whose implementation was agreed upon in the holy city of Najaf in partnership with RCD, which serves as a platform for dialogue for youth to support and involve them in the political dialogue and the social initiatives, and to create a proper atmosphere for understanding and for a new culture of dialogue.
The Belgian ambassador talked about the efforts of his country in supporting Iraq through its participation in fighting against ISIS on the ground. He also clarified that he sees that the city of Najaf can be a center for new Iraqi renaissance, as it is currently an important center of cultural and political stability in Iraq. He also pointed out that the most important things that help investment in Iraq is providing a proper environment, formulating safe contracts and ensuring an effective banking system, expressing his gratitude to this host at RCD’s headquarter.
