Al-Rafidain Center for Dialogue (RCD) hosted former Prime Minister Dr. Haider al-Abadi at its Sérgio Vieira de Mello Hall for a dialogue session titled, "The Political Process in Iraq Twenty Years After the Change: The Controversy of Internal Consensus and Fears of External Intervention." The session, moderated by media personality Dr. Raji Naseer, was attended by a significant official, academic, and public audience.

In his address, Dr. al-Abadi focused on numerous issues concerning both the domestic and the regional/international arenas. He summarized the major risks that his government faced, particularly during the period when the ISIS terrorist organization overran large areas of Iraq, posing a profound threat to the country's national and human security.

Dr. al-Abadi emphasized his government's efforts at the time to combat ISIS and the methods employed to defeat the organization. He also pointed to a number of factors that contributed to the group's emergence, such as the rampant corruption within state institutions at the time, as well as the broader regional situation.

In another part of his discussion, Dr. al-Abadi touched on the subject of how his government managed its affairs during that critical period, as well as the mechanisms and circumstances that led to his appointment as Prime Minister. On another note, Dr. al-Abadi highlighted the improvement in Iraq's regional and international relations, noting the significant shifts that occurred in the foreign policies of other nations toward Iraq.

The session featured numerous interventions and questions related to Dr. al-Abadi's experience, his positions, and his vision for the stages the political process has undergone. He also offered his foresight on its future trajectory.
