Ambassador Hitchen reviewed the stages of development in the relationship between Iraq and the United Kingdom, particularly after 2003. He addressed several key files, most notably in the security, political, and economic spheres, indicating that significant opportunities exist to continue developing bilateral relations. He highlighted the fields of investment and trade as crucial for consolidating the partnership with Iraq, expecting progress to be made in the coming years. The Ambassador also pointed to other issues concerning freedom of opinion and expression, as well as the field of education, praising the step taken by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani regarding the provision of 5,000 academic scholarships, which he deemed a significant and important step.
During the session, Ambassador Hitchen described the current relations with Iraq as living in their "golden age." Recalling the Iraqi people's victories over ISIS, he emphasized that it was Iraq that achieved victory, and that other countries, including the United Kingdom, played a supporting role.
The regional environment and its ongoing events were also a part of the Ambassador's discussion. He addressed the wars and crises in the region, particularly the war in Gaza. In response to a question from an attendee, he said, "We cannot exert pressure on Israel and the United States because our country does not possess the necessary capabilities to do so."
