RCD Holds Virtual Seminar on Regional Water Crisis
The speakers at the seminar included:
1. Banafsheh Keynoush: Expert in Iranian and foreign affairs.
2. Mr. Mahmoud Reza Amin: Former member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
3. Mr. Hatem Hamid al-Tamimi: Director General of the National Center for Water Resources Management.
4. Mr. Ali Radhi: Director General and official spokesperson for the Ministry of Water Resources.
Ms. Keynoush stated that the water shortage in the region is not due to legal, environmental, or resource-based reasons, but rather stems from the political interests between neighboring countries. She asserted that Iran employs "mafia-style" tactics in its management of this file.
Following her, Mr. al-Tamimi focused on the domestic situation, clarifying that Iraq's water reserves stand at 30% and that the country has not yet reached the stage of water poverty. He noted that a strategy for a solution has been prepared but lacks the necessary financial allocations.
Mr. Amin centered on a proposal that "the discussants later agreed upon," which is for the lands of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to become the water reservoir for the country, should the political and objective conditions for achieving this become available.
Meanwhile, Mr. Radhi presented a number of official government statistics regarding pollution rates, the expansion of dam construction, efforts to halt water waste, and the reduction of surplus water flowing into the Gulf.
The seminar's moderator, Dr. Ahmed Al-Mamouri, Chairman of the Board of Advisors at RCD, concluded by stressing the importance of investing in foreign relations with major powers. He cited the Iraqi Prime Minister's visit to the United States as an example, urging that such visits be leveraged to serve the country's interests and resolve critical issues like energy, the environment, and water resources to achieve water security for Iraq.
