Al-Rafidain Center for Dialogue (RCD) has announced the release of its latest publication, "Soldiers and Citizens," authored by Carl Mirra, a distinguished historian and professor at the Ruth S. Ammon College of Education at Adelphi University, USA.

This work is a significant contribution to the field of oral history, documenting the occupation of Iraq from the front lines to the halls of the Pentagon through the direct testimonies of American soldiers and officers.

Unlike traditional military histories, Mirra’s work focuses on the human element, capturing the voices of those who were active participants in the military and security theaters. The book deliberately brings together a diverse array of perspectives to foster a deeper understanding of the 2003 war as seen through American eyes:

  • Veterans and Active Duty: Testimonies from both pro-war soldiers and anti-war veterans.
  • Families: Insights from households directly impacted by the consequences of the conflict.
  • Policymakers: Perspectives from those who shaped the strategic and political landscape.

Spanning five chapters, the volume provides a comprehensive evaluation of the U.S.-Iraq relationship. Key highlights include:

  • Firsthand Accounts: Detailed narratives from American officers describing the realities of the battlefield.
  • Expert Analysis: Contributions from journalists and writers evaluating the military, security, and social outcomes of the war.
  • Socio-Economic Assessment: A critical look at the economic and social shifts within Iraq during and after the occupation.

The Goal of the Work is to bridge the gap between opposing viewpoints and develop a nuanced dialogue regarding the merits and failures of the 2003 intervention.
